This is the full 3-3-2014 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On today’s episode of Labor Express we take a look at the ongoing labor battle at UIC, the University of Illinois, Chicago campus. Two years ago the faculty organized into the University of Illinois at Chicago United Faculty (UICUF), American Federation of Teachers (AFT-IFT) Local 6456. The union was given official recognition in 2012. But the union has been negotiating with the university for almost two years for a first contract. The faculty at UIC are feed up with the lack of progress on a contract and final went out on strike for two days February 18th and 19th. It was a symbolic action but powerful nonetheless and has certainly ratcheted up the stakes in this fight.
On the program we will hear from members of the University of Illinois at Chicago United Faculty, including union president Joe Persky. I will also air an interview with Joe Iosbaker, Chief Steward with SEIU Local 73 and a staff member at UIC. Joe will put the fight at UIC in the context of the general attack on public sector workers and the increasing corporatization of education.
